Final Stats

San Jose, Calif. - Myzhanique Ladd and Taylor Turney combined for a 9-0 run midway through the fourth quarter breaking 50-50 tie and propelling the San José State women's basketball team to a 67-57 victory against the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners in its home opener on Friday night in The Event Center.

With 6:00 to go in the game, the Spartans (1-1) got a fast break layup from Ladd, with an assist from Turney, to take a 52-50 lead. Two possessions later, Ladd got a steal, which Turney turned into another layup. A minute after that Danae Marquez stole the ball and fed Ladd who scored again to make it a six-point game.

Ladd then hit one of two free throws and a Turney layup with just less than three minutes to play made it 59-50. From there SJSU cruised to the 10-point win.

Turney led all scorers with 15 points, one off her career-high, and set a career-best with nine assists. The sophomore had two steals and grabbed two of rebounds. Ladd was the game's leading rebounder with 11. She scored nine points, had three steals and two assists.

San José State trailed 4-0 in the first minute of the game, but over the next nine dominated the `Runners (1-2). They shot 44 percent from the field, including a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range, hit 6-of-8 from the line and led 26-10 after 10 minutes.

As good as the first quarter was, the second quarter was not. SJSU hit just 2-of-13 (15.4 percent), missed all five threes it attempted and scored just six points. However, the defense kept the team in the lead. They forced seven turnovers, got five steals and despite CSUB shooting 41 percent from the floor, held a 32-26 lead at the half.

Cydni Lewis' four points early in the third quarter pushed the Spartans to a 10-point advantage, 40-30, and San José State took a 47-38 lead into the final period.

CSUB went on a 10-0 run to open the fourth, capped by a Dalis Jones three pointer, which gave the Roadrunners the lead for the first time since the opening minute. But Andrea Kohlhaas came right back and drained a three of her own to put SJSU back in front 50-48.

A pair of CSU Bakersfield free throws tied the game at 50-50 and set the stage for the 9-0 run and the victory in the home opener.

The Spartans shot 38.5 percent from the field to the Roadrunners 29.6 percent and SJSU outrebounded CSUB 48-to-43.

San José State forced 23 turnovers and scored 20 points going the other way as well as outscoring the `Runners 28-to-20 in the paint.

For the second game in a row, Analyss Benally was the leading scorer off the bench, going 3-of-5 from three-point range for nine points. Mikaylah Wilson grabbed nine rebounds and added four points and Marquez had seven points, four assists, three steals and two boards.

CSU Bakersfield had two players in double figures. Jazmyne Bartee and Jazmine Johnson scored 13 and 12 points, respectively.

SJSU is right back at it on Sunday afternoon when it hosts Portland State at 2:00 p.m. in The Event Center.
