Stockton, Calif. - The San Jose State women's basketball team was outscored 40-to-24 in the paint and 21-to-5 in second chance points en route to an 81-73 loss at the hands of the Hampton Pirates in the final game of the Turkey Tip-Off in the Alex G. Spanos Center.
The Spartans (1-4), who shot 35.7 percent in the game, got 33 of their 73 points from Taylor Turney and Myzhanique Ladd. Turney finished with a team-high 20 points and led the squad with four assists. Ladd had 13 point and a team-best nine rebounds. Hallie Gennett and Andrea Kohlhaas added nine points each and had nine and five rebounds, respectively.
Hampton (2-3) had three players in double figures led by a 24-point, 21-rebound effort from Monnaz Finney-Smith. Ashley Bates also had a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds.
The Pirates scored the first bucket, but successive threes from Analyss Benally, Turney and Gennett saw SJSU take a 9-2 lead less than two minutes into the game. As quick as the Spartans grabbed the lead, Hampton came right back with a 9-2 run of its own tying the game 11-11 with just under six minutes to play in the period. Never trailing, but never able to build more than a three-point advantage, San Jose State led 22-20 after 10 minutes.
A Danae Marquez layup at the 7:41 mark of the second period made it a 30-22 lead for SJSU, what would turn out to be its largest of the game. Hampton then went on a 6-0 run, which was halted by a Kohlhaas three with 4:54 to go before intermission.
The Pirates finished last four minutes of the quarter on a 10-to-5 run sending the teams to the locker room tied 42-42. The Spartans shot 39 percent for the half, including 50 percent from beyond the arc, to Hamptons 45.9 and 18.2, respectively. The telling stat was Hampton's 24-to-12 advantage on points in the paint and its 11-to-0 lead in second-chance points.
The third period proved to be the turning point for both teams, but it began looking like San Jose State would be the team which would take control of the game. In the first three and a half minutes, they went on a 10-to-2 run, pried open a 52-44 lead and looked like they were poised to pull away. But as quickly as the lead came it disappeared.
The Pirates tied the game, 52-52, at the 5:08 mark and then closed the period on a 10-to-4 run taking a 62-56 lead into the last quarter.
Kohlhaas drilled her third three of the game in the first minute of the fourth quarter to bring SJSU to within three points, 62-59, but that was as close as they would get. Hampton pushed its advantage to as many as 13 points before finally taking the eight-point victory.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday night at Bay Area-rival Santa Clara. Tip off in the Broncos' Leavey Center is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
