2017 Mountain West Football Honors
Colorado Springs, Colo.----- San Jose State University linebacker Frank Ginda, punter Michael Carrizosa, placekicker Bryce Crawford and offensive guard Chris Gonzalez were named to the All-Mountain West football team in a vote by the conference's 12 head coaches.
Ginda, a junior from Los Banos, Calif., was a first-team selection; Carrizosa, a senior from Salinas, Calif., a second-team choice; Crawford, a junior from Frisco, Texas, and Gonzalez, a senior from Los Angeles, were honorable mention honorees.
"I think it is an incredible honor for these four players to be recognized by the coaches in this conference. Obviously, they all had tremendous years. We're extremely proud of the hard work they put in and the effort they put into to being great players," said San Jose State head coach Brent Brennan.
Ginda becomes the just second San Jose State linebacker to earn first-team Mountain West football honors since the Spartans joined the conference in 2013. The three-year starter established a new single season conference record and the eighth best total by a NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) player for tackles in a season with 173 in the team's 13-game season. His 13.31 tackles per game average presently ranks 20th best among FBS players since the 2000 season when the NCAA standardized defensive statistics.
Ginda also led the Spartans in solo tackles with 94, 13.0 tackles for loss and three forced fumbles.
Carrizosa earned his third All-Mountain West honor in three seasons. Presently, he is sixth nationally and second in the Mountain West with his 45.6 yards per punt average. A 2015 first-team all-conference pick and a Ray Guy Award finalist for the best punter in college football as a sophomore, he was an honorable mention Mountain West choice as a junior. He finished his four-years at San Jose State as the Spartans' single-season (47.3 in 2015) and career leader (44.0) in punting average and yardage.
Crawford became the first San Jose State placekicker to kick three field goals of 50 or more yards in a season and a career. He finished the season kicking five field goals of 50 or more yards including a career long of 53 yards against Utah State on September 23. A semifinalist for the Lou Groza Collegiate Placekicking Award, Crawford was 14-of-17 kicking field goals. He was 9-for-9 inside of 50 yards and 5-of-8 from 50 or more yards. For the second consecutive season, he led the Spartans in points scored finishing 2017 with 62.
Gonzalez, a three-year starter in the offensive line, was the only starter on the San Jose State offense to start in all 13 games. He completed his Spartan career starting in 36 contests.
