Santa Clara, Calif. - The San Jose State women's basketball team spotted the Santa Clara Broncos a 22-point lead midway through the second quarter and then stormed back to tie the game in regulation and won it 71-66 in overtime on Tuesday night in the Leavey Center.
Myzhanique Ladd, who finished with 14 points, nine rebounds, six assists and a steal, sank a three pointer with 2:17 to play in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 61-61. Neither team was able to score down the stretch and the teams went to overtime.
In the extra period, Ladd opened by hitting another three and Fieme'a Hafoka scored on a layup to give the Spartans a 66-61 lead. After a pair of Broncos' free throws, the advantage was three points. On SJSU's next possession, Hallie Gennett was fouled on a three-point shot attempt. She went to the line and knocked down all three shots from the charity stripe to make it 69-63.
Cydni Lewis scored with 1:27 to play off a beautiful feed from Taylor Turney, one of her five assists in the game, making it 71-63. Lewis finished a season-high 14 points and equaled her season-best with eight rebounds.
Santa Clara's Ashlyn Herlihy hit a three on the next possession to make it 71-66, but that was a close as the Broncos would get as the Spartans snapped a three-game losing streak and picked up their first road win of the season.
The come back was the largest for the Spartans in head coach Jamie Craighead's four-plus years leading the team. But it didn't look good for SJSU early on.
San Jose State (2-4) looked like they were suffering from a Thanksgiving tryptophan hangover in the first quarter. They shot 35 percent from the floor, committed six turnovers and struggled in every phase of the game. Meanwhile, SCU was on fire hitting 11-of-19 (58 percent), including 16 points in the paint and nine from three-point range. The Broncos turned those six Spartans turnovers into 10 points jumped out to a 28-11 lead after 10 minutes.
The lead reached a game-high 22 points, 36-14, with 6:02 to go in the second quarter, but at that point San Jose State began to right the ship, starting with a Danae Marquez three-pointer. The teams traded buckets and with 27 seconds to go, Ladd sank a three to make it a 17-point game at the intermission, 44-27.
In the first 20 minutes, SJSU had committed 12 turnovers, which Santa Clara turned into 17 points and were being outscored by six in second-chance points.
As much as the Spartans struggled in the first half, the team turned it around in the second half and began chipping away at the lead.
San Jose State forced seven turnovers in the third quarter and turned them into nine points. A Mikaylah Wilson steal with 8:09 to play led to an Analyss Benally three pointer, making it a 14-point game, 48-34.
Ladd stole the ball at the 5:30 mark, fed Lewis and on her layup the lead was down to 11, 52-41. A Hafoka layup with just over 3 minutes to go got the Spartans to within nine points and the teams headed to the fourth with SCU up 55-45.
The Broncos (2-4) hit the first bucket of the fourth period, but then the Spartans went on a 10-0 run. Lewis hit back-to-back layups, Marquez sank a three and Megan Anderson hit another to make it 57-55 with 5:43 to play.
After a Broncos' bucket, Anderson sank her second three in as many shots to get SJSU to within one, 59-58. Another Santa Clara hoop pushed it back to a three-point advantage, but Ladd's three with little more than two minutes left in regulation time tied it at 61-61, setting the stage for the Spartans five point overtime victory.
In the final 25 minutes, the third and fourth quarters and overtime, SJSU held Santa Clara to 22 points. They forced 10 turnovers, which they turned into nine points, outrebounded SCU 29-to-18 and had a four-point advantage in second-chance points.
Santa Clara got 56 of its 66 points from three players. Herlihy led the team with 23. Morgan McGwire scored 22 points and Taylor Berry added 11.
The Spartans return to action on Friday night against the San Francisco Dons. Tip off in The Event Center is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
