Giving the San José State University football program the best opportunity to be successful in non-conference play and be positioned to compete for Mountain West championships and post-season bowl invitations, the Spartans' non-conference schedules for the next four seasons (2018-2021) now are in place.
"Our goal for the competitive success and fiscal well-being of our football program is to play two of our four non-conference games at home, play one of those games against a FCS (Football Championship Subdivision) opponent as an early-season game, play a home-and-home series with a FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) team and schedule one game a season against a team from either the Pac-12, Big 12, Big Ten, SEC or ACC conferences," says director of athletics Marie Tuite.
"We have signed contracts that reflect this scheduling philosophy beginning with the 2019 season.
"I'd like to thank Steve O'Brien, our new deputy director for athletics, who took over football scheduling for his work completing the scheduling process once I became athletics director and to Coach Brennan who shares this vision for our program."
Over the next four seasons, first-time FBS opponents are Army West Point in a four-year home-and-home series with two games at CEFCU Stadium in 2018 and 2020 and at West Point in 2019 and 2021, SEC teams Arkansas in 2018 and Georgia in 2021, and Northern Colorado, a Big Sky Conference member in the FCS in 2019. One non-conference game for the 2020 season against a first-time opponent for San José State will be announced at a later date.
The Spartans will initiate home-and-home series with Central Michigan starting in 2020 and New Mexico State in 2021 and conclude a home-and-home arrangement with Tulsa in 2019. In 2018, the Spartans will play at Washington State for the first time since 1996 and return to Oregon for the first time since 1998.
In each season, San José State also has eight Mountain West games -- four at home and four on the road. The 2018 season will be the mirror image of 2017 with games at Fresno State, San Diego State, Utah State and Wyoming and home contests with Colorado State, Hawai'i, Nevada and UNLV. Air Force, Boise State and New Mexico replace Mountain Division conference teams Colorado State, Utah State and Wyoming for the 2019 and 2020 seasons.
