Las Vegas, Nev.- Fernanda Vido and Breann Robinson each recorded double-doubles on Saturday to help lead the San José State volleyball team to a 3-1 win at UNLV in a Mountain West match at Cox Pavilion.
The win snaps San José State's seven-match losing streak to the Rebels. The Spartans had not won against UNLV since November 9, 2009, in a 3-2 win at The Event Center.
Vido led all hitters with a season-best 26 kills in the win. She hit .293 for the match with 58 attempts and only nine errors. Vido also recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 12 digs too.
Robinson recorded her fifth double-double of the year with 53 assists and 17 digs. She also led the team in blocks with four, one solo and three assists.
Other contributing in the Spartan win include Laura Parts who hit .323 for the match with 15 kills on 31 attempts and only five errors. Jamie Hirai led the Spartans with three service aces and 17 digs along with two kills and two assists. Ryann Thomison added a season-best 10 kills as she hit .333 (10-2-24). Luiza Andrade added 14 digs, two assists and a service ace.
The Spartans started the match on a strong note, leading set one from the first serve and winning 25-20. San José State had to come from behind in the second set to win 25-23. The team trailed 20-16 before going on a 9-4 run and was behind 21-20 before scoring five of the final seven points.
After intermission, the Spartans fell in the third set 25-18. San José State then responded in the fourth set, taking the lead early and not letting the Rebels get back into the set or match in the 25-18 win.
San José State is now 16-9 overall and 8-6 in the MW. The team returns home next week for matches against Wyoming on Thursday, November 9, at 6 p.m., and #20 Colorado State on Saturday, November 11, at 2 p.m. Both matches will be played at Spartan Gym, located on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets. Admission to all matches is free.
