San Jose State postgame quotes
San Jose, Calif.----- An experienced and physical San Diego State offensive line imposed its will on San Jose State en route to a 52-7 Mountain West football victory.
The Aztecs (8-2, 4-2 Mountain West) rushed for a school-record 554 yards and six touchdowns. Rashaad Penny led the ground attack with 234 yards on 20 carries and had touchdown runs of 13, 82 and 64 yards. Back-up Juwan Washington was equally effective with 16 carries for 134 yards and a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs.
San Jose State (1-9, 0-5 Mountain West) struggled offensively. The Spartans had just 43 plays on offense and gained 200 yards. In contrast, the Aztecs had 78 plays, 71 of them on the ground.
Quarterback Montel Aaron did not have one of his better games. He completed 11-of-21 passes for 113 yards and was intercepted twice. One interception came right after a fumble recovery by freshman linebacker Tysyn Parker on the San Diego State 25-yard line. On the next play Aaron attempted to connect with Justin Holmes in the end zone, but his pass was picked off by cornerback Kameron Kelly.
As San Diego State racked up its yardage on the ground, the Spartans managed just 33 yards on 21 carries. The Aztecs limited freshman running back Tyler Nevens to 46 yards on 15 carries. It was Nevens' fewest carries in the last five games.
San Jose State's one touchdown came at the start of the third quarter. Aaron pitched a lateral pass out to wide receiver Tre Walker who found Holmes wide open behind the Aztecs secondary for a 54-yard touchdown to make the score 35-7.
But on the next play from scrimmage, it was Penny with racing to paydirt on a 64-yard footrace for a 42-7 lead.
The Spartans head on the road for the next two weekends. San Jose State is at Nevada, Saturday, November 11, in a 1:00 p.m. game followed by a November 18 contest at Colorado State.
