San Jose, Calif .---- Finlay Wood and Zach Penner scored in the second half of the match as San José State University defeated University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, 2-0,in a Western Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal round match.

San Jose State (8-10-1) earned its sixth shutout win of the season and fifth shutout in the last seven matches. The Spartans advance to the semifinals against regular-season champion and #12-ranked Air Force on Friday, November 10, at 4:00 p.m.

The first goal of the match came in the 56th minute when Max Allen gave a pass to Wood at the top of the box. Wood put the ball into the top left corner of the cage for his first goal of the season.

The Spartans increased their lead to 2-0 in the 75th minute. Zach Penner took Allen's free kick and headed the ball past UTRGV goalkeeper Aalto Esa.

"I think we had a dominant second half and that won the goal for us. It's a cliché with this team, if they get the first goal they can see rest of the game out very well," said the head coach Simon Tobin.

San Jose State outshot UTRGV (7-7-3), 10-8. Spartans goalkeeper David Heredia was credited with one save.
