Corvallis, Ore. - Three Spartans had career-highs in the scoring column, but the #19/19 Oregon State Beavers shot 63.9 percent from the floor and cruised to a 110-62 victory over the San José State women's basketball team on Sunday afternoon in Gill Coliseum.
Senior Myzhanique Ladd, a native of Seattle, Wash., made what will likely be her final collegiate appearance in the Pacific Northwest, and equaled her career high with 19 points. Sophomore Fieme'a Hafoka and freshman Chinwe Ezeonu, also from Seattle, set career-high's with 11 and five points, respectively.
San Jose State (2-7), which suffered through its worst free throw shooting performance of the year (13-of-30) last Thursday against CSUN, rebounded with its best day at the line on Sunday with a 10-of-11 (90.9 percent) effort against the Beavers.
OSU came into the game shooting 53.4 percent from the field and 45 percent from beyond the three-point line and bettered both those numbers against SJSU. They made 46-of-72 shots (63.9 percent) and 12-of-23 (52.2 percent) from beyond the arc. The only area the Beavers struggled in was at the line where they knocked down 6-of-11 (54.5 percent).
The Spartans and Oregon State (6-2) traded buckets in the first three minutes, but OSU used two double-digit first quarter runs to pry open a lead they would never relinquish. With the Beavers up 12-8 and 6:57 to go in the first, they went on a four-minute, 13-2 run in which six different players contributed a bucket.
A Hafoka three, one of a team-leading three she would hit, staunched the bleeding and made the score 25-13, but Oregon State finished the quarter on an 11-0 run and took a 36-13 lead into the second period.
The Beavers shot 80 percent (16-of-20) from the floor in the first, including 4-of-5 from three-point range. In the quarter Katie McWilliams led OSU with 10 points and was one of six Oregon State players who finished in double figures. Marie Gülich led her team with 22 points and 11 rebounds.
The Spartans best period was the second. They equaled the bigger Beavers 12-to-12 in points in the paint, forced six turnovers. One of those turnovers was a steal by Hallie Gennett, who then nailed a three to cut the Oregon State to 18, 42-24. After another turnover on the next possession, Hafoka hit a jumper to make it a 16-point game 42-26 with 5:56 to play before the half.
Despite those positives, OSU still shot 52 percent (10-of-19), finished the period on a 19-to-5 run, and led 61-33 at the half. The second period was SJSU's best of the game. They hit 36 percent (8-of-22) and were 2-of-5 from three-point range.
In the second half, Oregon State continued its hot shooting. They hit 58.8 percent in the third, 62.5 in the fourth and built a game-high 51-point lead, 108-57 with 2:52 to play, en route to the 48-point victory.
San José State was outmanned inside against the much taller Beavers, who didn't have a forward under 6-1 and featured Gülich at 6-5 and Joanna Grymek at 6-8, who combined for 32 points and 16 boards.
The Spartans hoped to limit OSU from beyond the arc, but Oregon State's ball movement proved to be to adept for the SJSU defense. The Beavers hit 52 percent from distance and outscored the Spartans 58-to-24 in the paint.
The Spartans were the third straight Mountain West opponent for OSU having defeated Nevada and Utah State last week.
The Spartans next game is in The Event Center on December 17 against Nebraska. Tip off on Walt McPherson is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
