San Jose, Calif.--- Jacob Mercep has earned an All-America Honorable Mention for his 2017 campaign in his first season as a Spartan.
"Jacob is an excellent player, and its great he is being ackowledged for his hard work by the other coaches in college water polo," said Spartan head coach Bruce Watson. "We are proud that are young program is being recognized by other coaches in the nation."
The true freshman from Dubrovnik, Croatia led the Golden Coast Conference, and set a San José State University record with 93 goals and 119 points scored in a single season. He was ninth in the conference with 26 assists.
Mercep earned GCC Player of the Week twice during his first season.
The first honor was for his performance at the MPSF Invitational Tournament where he led the field with 22 goals in four games. Mercep scored six goals against #2 USC, #7 UCSB, and #19 Pomona-Pitzer. In the last match of the invitational, he scored four times against Air Force.
Mercep earned his second GCC Player of the Week honor when he led the Gary Troyer Tournament with 17 goals in three games to help the Spartans to a 3-1 record. The team earned wins over #15 Cal Baptist, Chapman, and #22 Whittier. Mercep scored nine goals on 12 shots against #15 Cal Baptist to set a San José State single game record with nine goals and one assist in the match.
