San Jose, Calif. - Sophomore Fieme'a Hafoka had 12 points and four assists, both career-highs, for the San José State women's basketball team, but it was not enough to overcome the Nebraska Cornhuskers in an 81-55 loss in the Event Center on Sunday afternoon.
Joining Hafoka with 12 points was senior Myzhanique Ladd who also grabbed five rebounds, had an assist and a steal. Freshman Cydni Lewis had a career-high 10 rebounds and added nine points.
The Spartans (2-8) who had been outrebounded by 38 and 27 against their two previous Power 5 opponents UCLA and Oregon State, respectively, cut that margin to 11 against their Big Ten opponent on Sunday. Despite its overall improvement, SJSU was still beaten 22-to-11 on the offensive glass, which Nebraska used to its advantage 19-to-6 in second chance points.
The other telling stat in the game was that the Huskers forced 19 turnovers and scored 22 points of the San Jose State miscues. The Spartans turned Nebraska (8-3) over six times, but didn't score on those plays.
SJSU, which never led, held its opponent to under 20 points in the first quarter for just the third time in nine games this season. Lewis scored the team's first seven points and after Ladd made one of two from the free throw line, the Spartans were within a point, 15-14 with 1:27 to go.
Ladd would go 6-of-8 from the line in the game. She tied Lamisha Augustine for 12th place on the programs career free throws list with 231 and she passed Dezz Ramos and Dana Foster to move into 16th place on the career free throw attempts list.
Trailing 17-14 heading into the second, Nebraska began exerting its size advantage. They outscored the smaller SJSU squad 16-to-2 in the paint and off six turnovers scored nine points. The Spartans made 4-of-15 from the field, while Nebraska hit 10-of-23. Maddie Simon had 12 of her game high 20 points in the first half for the Huskers and Nebraska led 39-25 at the half.
The third period was more of the same. Nebraska made 50 percent from the field (9-of-18), including 10 of its 25 points in the paint, and extended its advantage to a game-high 27 with just under a minute to go in the third. The lead was 25 heading to the final period before the Huskers won by 26, 81-55.
San Jose State wraps up the non-conference portion of its schedule on Wednesday night when it hosts Southern Oregon at 7:00 p.m. on Walt McPherson Court.
