Berkeley, Calif.----- San Jose State University's Colleen Humel won her eighth consecutive individual backstroke race of the 2017-18 season in the Spartans' 132-78 dual meet loss to #3-California at the Spieker Aquatics Complex.
Swimming in the 150-yard backstroke for the first time this season, the senior from Chicopee, Mass., posted a 1:28.68 time. She edged California's Aislinn Light who was clocked in 1:28.72. Humel now is 8-1 in individual backstroke races this season. Her only loss in a backstroke race was a fifth-place finish in the season-opening Chick-fil-A Invitational at Fresno State.
Humel's victory against the Golden Bears (5-0) was the Spartans' only win in the 12-race format that only had one traditional dual meet race -- the 50 free. In that event, Brittany Heng was the fastest Spartan with a 23.88 time for one of her two second-place freestyle finishes. There were three-person relay races and events with lengths of 150, 250, 300 and 800 yards.
Kate Hanf in the 300 individual medley, Violani Auva'a in the 150 fly, Katie McIntee in the 300 free and Jenna Lloyd in the 150 breaststroke also notched second-place finishes for the Spartans.
"Having a meet with non-traditional events was a great way to add a fun twist to things with both teams coming out of final exams yesterday," said San Jose State head coach Sage Hopkins.
"Swimming against Cal, the top NCAA program over the past decade, was a great way to finish out the fall. I am very happy with our performance. We had many standout efforts today and it was great to see Colleen win the 150 backstroke."
The Spartans have 11 days off before a four-day swing to CSU Bakersfield and UC San Diego. The CSU Bakersfield dual meet is up first on December 31 at 10:00 a.m.
