San Jose, Calif. - Cydni Lewis blocked a shot with 1.5 seconds remaining in overtime and then hit the game winner as the San José State women's basketball team defeated the Southern Oregon Raiders 89-87 on Wednesday night in The Event Center.
With the game tied 87-87 and 32 seconds to play in overtime, Southern Oregon (11-1) had the ball and held it for what it hoped would be the go ahead bucket. With time running down, Toria Bradford attempted a three pointer from the right side of the arc. Lewis flew out at and swatted away. The ball went off the shooter, which gave possession to the Spartans with 1.5 seconds to play.
Head Coach Jamie Craighead called time out and advanced the ball to the frontcourt. Inbounding the ball, Fieme'a Hafoka threw a lob for Lewis at the block on the opposite side of the lane. She caught it with three defenders around her, banked the game winner home and was mobbed by her teammates as the buzzer sounded.
The win snapped a four-game skid for San José State (3-8), its longest of the season and moved SJSU to 2-0 in overtime games this year.
Four Spartans scored in double figures led by Myzhanique Ladd's 18 points. Ladd made 6-of-7 from the free throw line and moved into 10th place on the program's career free throws list. In addition, she grabbed eight rebounds.
Taylor Turney had 12 points, a team-high six assists and four rebounds. Hallie Gennett score 11, had four boards, an assist and a block and Megan Anderson, in her second consecutive start, scored 10 points.
Alexis Harris led the team with nine rebounds and blocked four shots. She also had an assist, a steal and scored a bucket. The rebounds and blocks were both career highs.
The Spartans committed 40 turnovers, which Southern Oregon used to score 28 points, 19 coming in the second half. They were the defining stat of the game.
SJSU trailed 17-16 with 1:38 to go in the first, but went on a 14-0 run capped by an Anderson three, two minutes into the second period, to stake the Spartans to a 30-17 lead.
On a Daranda Hinkey three pointer, the Raiders cut the lead to single digits, 32-25. SJSU quickly pushed its advantage to 15 points inside four minutes to go and took a 50-35 lead into to the locker room.
In the first 20 minutes, San José State shot 65.5 percent from the field, and 54.5 percent from beyond the three-point line, but gave up nine points off 15 turnovers to allow SOU to remain within striking distance.
A Ladd three in the first minute of the third period gave SJSU its biggest lead of the game, 18 points, at 53-35. The Spartans still led by double digits, 61-50 with 1:34 to go in the period, but four turnovers in the final five possession of the quarter allowed the Raiders to trim its deficit to eight going to the fourth.
SJSU never surrendered the lead in the fourth quarter, but 10 turnovers in the period allowed Southern Oregon to tie the game twice including at 79-79 with 22 second left. The Spartans had a chance to win it at the buzzer, but an Anderson three bounced off the iron with a second to go and the teams went to overtime.
In the extra frame, San José State finally cleaned up its play. They built a five-point lead, 84-79, in the first minute only to see it whittled down to one, 84-83, within the next minute.
Analyss Benally nailed a three with 2:45 to play to push the lead back to four. But three straight empty possessions and a pair of SOU jumpers tied the game at 87-87 with 32 second left.
From there Lewis took over and the Spartans escaped with an 89-87 victory.
Southern Oregon's Remi Mejia and Hinkey led their team with 22 points each.
The Spartans have a week off and then return to action on December 28 opening Mountain West play against Utah State. Tipoff, in the Event Center, is set for 7:00 p.m.
