Dec. 28, 2017

Final Stats

San Jose, Calif. - The San Jose State women's basketball team shot 51 percent from the floor (30-of-59), including 60 percent from three point range (12-of-20), both season highs, to open 2017-18 Mountain West Conference play with a 79-66 win over the Utah State Aggies.

The Spartans had two players in double figures, both with career highs. Sophomore Taylor Turney led all scorers with 24 points and freshman Megan Anderson had 14, and a career-best six rebounds.

SJSU (4-8, 1-0 MW) won its conference opener for the fourth straight season and for the third time its victim was Utah State (2-10, 0-1 MW).

Utah State had a good night from the field, making 28-of-61 (45.9 percent), and built a 12-7 lead in the first eight minutes. But back-to-back three from Hallie Gennett and Turney followed by a Turney layup with eight seconds to play gave the Spartans a 15-14 lead after one.

With 4:24 left before the half, San José State was up 26-24. The Spartans closed the period with an 11-2 spurt and led 37-26 going into the intermission. In the run, Mikaylah Wilson scored four of her eight points on the night. Turney had a pair of buckets and Anderson sank one of her game-high four treys.

San José State kept its double-digit lead throughout the third period. When Myzhanique Ladd hit a three, was fouled on the play, and sank the free throw it gave SJSU its biggest lead of the game, 17 points, at 58-41 with 1:29 to go in the quarter.

The Aggies missed their first nine three-point attempts before finally sinking one with 3:45 to play. That three made it a 10-point game and 45 seconds later a layup cut the Spartans advantage to eight 72-64.

Anderson then drained a three-pointer with just under two minutes to play, which pushed the lead back to 11 and the Spartans closed the game out for the 13-point victory.

Utah State had four players in double figures led by Hailey Bassett's 17 points. Deja Mason recorded a double double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

The Spartans travel to Colorado State for a Saturday matchup against the Rams. Tip off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. (MT).
