Final Stats

Fort Collins, Colo. - The San Jose State women's basketball team trailed by five points entering the fourth quarter against the Colorado State Rams, but made just three buckets in the final 10 minutes and lost 63-48 on Saturday afternoon.

Myzhanique Ladd led the team with a 16 point, 10 rebound effort; the only Spartan to reach double digits in the scoring column. It is her second double double of the season and third of her career.

Colorado State (9-4, 1-1 MW) led 43-38 entering the fourth and, after a Cydni Lewis layup, still clung to a five-point advantage, 51-46, with 4:38 to play.

From there SJSU missed its last four shots, got just a pair of Ladd free throws while CSU went 5-for-11, scored 12 points and took the 15-point victory. A pair of Stine Austgulen three pointers highlighted the run.

The final period, and the last four minutes in particular, spoiled the effort of San José State. The Spartans (4-9, 1-1 MW) had an advantage on the boards against a taller Rams team through the first 20 minutes, 21-to-15. SJSU was outrebounded 15-to-9 in the third, and in the decisive fourth CSU got the better of the Spartans to the tune of 15-to-6 on the glass.

In the final period, eleven of the Rams rebounds were on the defensive end, which limited the Spartans to a single shot on multiple possessions.

In the first five minutes, San José State weathered a blistering CSU shooting display in which the Rams hit 70 percent, but by the first media timeout, the deficit was just four points, 11-7.

Colorado State's Jordyn Edwards' layup with just under two minutes to go in the first gave CSU an 18-12 lead. Taylor Turney hit a three with one minute to play to make it 18-15 after one and Analyss Benally's three early in the second tied the game 18-18.

Cydni Lewis tied it again at 20-20 and when Turney sank another layup, SJSU had its first lead of the game, 22-20 with 7:28 to go before intermission. The lead changed five more times before the half, the last coming with one second to go before the buzzer. CSU's Hannah Tvrdy, who paced her team with 10 points and 10 rebounds, sank a three pointer to give CSU a 28-26 halftime lead.

The Spartans tied the game 28-28 on a Lewis layup in the first minute of the third quarter, but CSU then went on a 7-0 run. A Megan Anderson three-pointer and Ladd cut the lead to 35-33 with 3:46 to play in the quarter. The Rams responded with a 6-0 run to push their advantage to eight and the Spartans would never get closer than five points the rest of the way.

With a focus on stopping second-chance points, the Spartans limited CSU to four offensive rebounds in the first half and had a 5-to-4 advantage in second chance points through 20 minutes. For the game, Colorado State outrebounded SJSU 15-to-9 on the offensive end, but San José State held the Rams to just a 10-to-9 lead in second-chance points.

For the game, SJSU shot 34.5 percent (19-of-55) compared to CSU at 39.4 percent (26-of-66) and each team scored 26 points in the paint.

The Spartans return to action on Wednesday January 3 in Las Vegas. San José State and the UNLV Rebels tip off at 6:00 p.m.
