Kansas City, Mo.----- Andy Rios, one of the stalwart defenders on the San Jose State University men's soccer team, was named as a third-team honoree to the United Soccer Coaches All-Far West Region all-star team.
Rios, a junior from Chowchilla, Calif., and a transfer from Fresno City College, was instrumental in the Spartans' late-season run of seven wins in their last nine matches and a berth in the 2017 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) championship match against #23-ranked Seattle University. San Jose State won six of those seven victories by shutout.
"Andy emerged as one of the top central defenders in college soccer. Andy was instrumental in our successful run to the WAC championship game," said San Jose State men's soccer head coach Simon Tobin, who led the team to a 9-11-1 win-loss record.
Rios, a 2017 second-team All-Western Athletic Conference honoree, was one of three San Jose State players to start and play in all 21 matches. He was second on the squad in minutes played with 1,861.
On offense, Rios contributed three goals and one assist. He tied for second on the team in goal scoring and game-winning goals with two. His shots on goal percentage of .625 tied for tops on the Spartans. Rios was one of two players on the team to score twice in a match this season and his two scores in the 3-2 win over UC Davis propelled San Jose State to victory.
Rios' honor makes it three consecutive years a San Jose State player is honored. In 2016, forward Jonathan Colunga was named a third-team All-Far West Region honoree. In 2015, forward Rory Knibbs was a second-team pick.
