Nampa, Idaho ----- Sophomore Destiny Longmire became the first San Jose State University women's track and field competitor to surpass the 6.00-meter threshold in the long jump with a winning mark of 6.05 meters at the season-opening Jackson's Open meet.
Longmire, the 2017 Mountain West women's outdoor long jump champion, exceeded her previous school record of 5.98 meters in the team's first event of the 2017-18 indoor season. She also finished second in the 60-meter dash at 7.81.
"It was an outstanding meet for us. We had people `PR' across all events and are coming home with some new school records. That was really exciting to see," said San Jose State University director of track and field Jeff Petersmeyer, who watched his 14-member traveling squad set one school record, tie another, have four Spartans move into the #2-spot on the school's all-time list and one more jump to #3.
"The last couple of years, we opened up (the indoor season) in January. We put this meet on the schedule late. We thought we had a good fall (training season) and we wanted to leave on a high note at the end of the semester and not wait six weeks for our competitions (to begin). We were able to get some good experience here in Boise."
Longmire was one of five San Jose State first-place finishers, the most by any of the eight schools at the Jackson's Open.
Brittany Brown, a Laney College transfer, tied the school record winning the 60 meter hurdles and was first in the triple jump as the meet's only multi-event winner. Brown posted a time of 8.68 in the 60 hurdles and a mark of 12.12 meters in the triple jump, good for #2 on the San Jose State career list. Kelsey Johnson-Upshaw's 11.90 meters mark for second place in the triple jump moved her up to #4 on the Spartans' list for top-10 in the event.
Freshmen Sarahvaughn King and Devyn Weisenberger joined Brown as winners in their San Jose State track and field debuts.
King, a graduate of Armijo High in Fairfield, Calif., and named after legendary 20th century jazz singer Sarah Vaughan, raced to victory in the 200 meters with a 24.83 time - #2 on the all-time San Jose State list in her major college debut. King's 59.83 fifth-place time in 400 meters vaulted her to #3 on the Spartans' list in the event.
Lovenie Dantes, King's Armijo High and now San Jose State teammate, finished in fourth place in the 400 meters at 59.28, #2 on the school's top-10 career list.
Weisenberger led a 1-2 Spartan finish in the high jump with a 1.65-meter clearance. Temmates Kolbi Sims and Natalie Gutierrez tied for second at 1.60 meters. Weisenberger's winning height moved her into a second place tie on the San Jose State top-10 high jump list.
Senior Maiha Raza and sophomore Jayla Williams moved into the Spartans' top-five in the 60 meters and 60 meter hurdles, respectively. Raza, a senior, posted a lifetime best of 7.84 to finish third in the 60 meters. Williams was third in the hurdles at 8.83, good for #4 on the San Jose State list.
