Reno, Nev. - Taylor Turney scored a career-high 28 points, but the San José State women's basketball team was dominated on the boards and lost to the Nevada Wolf Pack 91-63 on Wednesday night in the Lawlor Event Center.
Turney bested her previous scoring high of 26 points, which was set earlier this season against Utah State. She was 11-of-15 from the field, including 2-of-3 from beyond the three-point line and sank 4-of-5 from the free throw line. With 10 points, Danae Marquez was the only other Spartan in double figures. Marquez hit 4-of-6 from the field including 2-of-2 from distance.
Nevada (10-7, 3-3 MW) had five players in double figures led by Terae Briggs' 18 points. AJ Cephas had a double double with 14 points and 12 of her team's 57 rebounds.
The boards proved to be San José State's undoing. They were out rebounded 57-to-25, including 23-to-6 on the offensive glass. The Wolf Pack used that disparity to outscore SJSU (6-12, 3-4 MW) by 23 in second-chance points, 25-2, in what was a 28-point loss.
With the scored 2-2 in the first minute, Nevada used a 9-0 run in a little over two minutes to take an 11-2 lead. A Myzhanique Ladd free throw ended the run with 6:30 to go in the quarter. Marquez then hit a three-pointer and a jumper followed by a Ladd jumper to get SJSU back into it at 11-10.
After a Courtesy Clark three it was 16-15 Nevada, and with 59 seconds left Turney sank a jumper which made it 18-17. But that was as close as San José State would get the rest of the way and they trailed 22-17 after one.
In the second quarter, Nevada outrebounded the Spartans 19-3, including 9-0 on the offensive glass. They had a 12-0 advantage in second chance points, outscored SJSU 30-14 and took a 52-31 lead in to the intermission. Turney scored 12 of San José State's 14 points in the period with only a Ladd layup in the last two minutes to help the cause.
A Janelle Sumilong three-pointer with 5:12 to go in the third put Nevada up 65-38 and it looked like SJSU was done, but the team battled back. Analyss Benally, Marquez and Turney hit threes. Mikaylah Wilson made a jumper, Turney hit two of her own and by the time the quarter had come to an end, SJSU had clawed back to make it a 16-point game, 69-53 with 10 minutes to play.
In the first five-plus minutes of the final period, the Wolf Pack put any thought of a Spartans comeback to rest. They outscored SJSU 16-1, built their biggest lead of the night, 31-points, and cruised to a 28-point victory.
Nevada's 57 rebounds are the second most by a Spartans' opponent this year and the eighth time they have given up at least 50 in a game. San José State's 25 boards are the second fewest they have grabbed in a game this season.
San Jose State has a bye on Saturday and return to action on next Wednesday in The Event Center. The Spartans host the Boise State Broncos with tip off scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
