La Jolla, Calif.----- San Jose State University defeated the University of Incarnate Word, 214.00 to 77.00, and was edged by UC San Diego, 152.00 to 148.00, in a pair of women's swimming and diving non-conference dual meets at the Canyonview Pool.
With the win over Incarnate Word, Sage Hopkins became the first San Jose State University women's swimming and diving head coach to lead the Spartans to 100 dual meet victories. In the midst of his 13th season, he has a college head coaching career record of 100-36-1.
"All of the credit for these wins go to the great swimmers and divers with which I've been honored to work over the past 13 seasons at SJSU," said Hopkins.
San Jose State (3-2) had 12 of 16 first-place finishes in its dual meet scoring against Incarnate Word and evenly split the first-place results with UC San Diego.
"I felt our team performance was solid today. It was significantly better than our meet in Bakersfield (on December 31)," Hopkins said about the team's second meet on the road in three days.
"UC San Diego had a tremendous team effort today and we came up four points short. We did split our two (200 free) relay teams in the last event as a last ditch effort. Had we gone first and second, we would have tied UC San Diego," the Spartans coach explained about the strategy at the end of the meet. San Jose State was first and third with UC San Diego's A team taking second in the 200 free relay to win the dual meet by four points.
The Spartans also were first overall in the 200 medley relay. Individually, Colleen Humel extended her undefeated streak in the backstroke to 12 touching first in the 100 and 200 back. Humel, one of two swimmers to win twice in the meet, also was second overall in the 400 individual medley. Brittany Heng won the 50 free; Brenna Bushey, the 100 fly; and Cari Reiswig, the 3-meter dive.
San Jose State concludes its road trip with a second dual meet in two days versus UC San Diego (4-2) on Wednesday, January 3, at 2:00 p.m. in the Canyonview Pool.
