Boise State Puts Spartans Away From Three-Point Land

Boise, Idaho --- The San José State men's basketball team lost on the road at Boise State, 94-71, in Mountain West play on Wednesday night.
The Broncos (17-4, 7-2 MW) were absolutely sizzling from beyond the arc, making a season-high 18 from downtown. Boise State used the 3-ball to surge ahead by as many as 29 points with 7:04 left in the second half.
San José State (3-16, 0-8 MW) went toe-to-toe with Boise State in the first half thanks to nine early points from Keith Fisher III and 10 points from Ryan Welage. Welage knocked down a pair of threes while Noah Baumann, Isaiah Nichols and Jaycee Hillsman all hit one from downtown in the first period.
Fisher's jumper in the paint with 6:35 left in the half made it 29-27 Boise State lead. In a flash though the Broncos went on a 12-0 run and pulled away by 16 points before the period was over. Chris Sengfelder hit two threes, and Lexus Williams and Chandler Hutchison made layups as part of the run which helped give the Broncos a 47-34 advantage at halftime.
The second half was all Broncos. They hit 9-of-19 from beyond the arc with three coming from Hutchison. Sengfelder continued his career-night making 5-of-8 shots in the second period. He led Boise State with a new career-high 31 points.
Meanwhile the Spartans were shooting it well but could not keep up with the 3-point firepower from Boise State. The Spartans shot 53.8 percent (28-52) from the floor for the game, but made 10 less 3-pointers than the opposition.
Welage scored 12 points in the second half and finished the game with a team-leading 22 points. It was his ninth 20-point game of the year. Fisher finished with a new career-high 16 points. Hillsman had eight points in the second half and finished with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting for the game.
Hutchison scored 19 points and Williams scored 16 points for Boise State.
San José State returns home to face Wyoming on Saturday, Jan. 27, at 2:00 p.m. (PT).
