UNLV Dominates Inside In Defeating The Spartans 79-60

Las Vegas, Nev. - UNLV scored 50 of its 79 points in the paint en route to defeating the San José State women's basketball team 79-60 in Mountain West action on Wednesday night.

The Spartans had no answer for the size and inside game of the Rebels who had four players in double figures, including double doubles from Paris Strawther, 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Katie Powell, 11 points and 13 rebounds.

The SJSU (4-10, 1-2 MW) struggled from the floor shooting 30 percent (18-of-60) and endured its worst night of the season from beyond the arc. The Spartans missed their first 10 shots from distance, and hit just 5-of-30 (16.7 percent) in the game, with three of its five treys coming in the fourth quarter when the game was already in UNLV's hands.

The Rebels (6-7, 1-1 MW) made 28 buckets in 61 attempts (45.9 percent) with 25 of its 28 baskets coming in the paint. The only field goals outside the lane, which UNLV scored, were a three pointer and a pair of jump shots. In addition, they made 22-of-25 free throw attempts (88 percent) and outrebounded the Spartans 50-to-30.

San José State committed five fouls in the first three minutes of the game, put UNLV on the line for nearly seven minutes of the first period and watched the Rebels sink 11-of-13 from the stripe in the quarter. SJSU also spent a good bit of the period at the free throw line as well making 8-of-11, but trailed 21-16 after 10 minutes.

In the second quarter the Rebels took a double-digit lead, with six of its seven buckets beings scored in the paint. They shot 46 percent from the floor and led 36-24 at the intermission.

While UNLV thrived in the second period, San José State made just 2-of-12 from the floor. An Analyss Benally three finally ended an 0-for-10 start for the team from the three-point range and got the Spartans to within 11 with 4:23 to play before the half, but they would get no closer and trailed 36-24 at the intermission.

Five times in the third, SJSU was able to cut the lead to 11, the last on a layup from Cydni Lewis with 2:58 to go. But UNLV closed the period on an 8-0 run, scored the first two buckets of the fourth to lead by 23. They held onto at least a 20-point lead until Courtesy Clark hit a layup with three seconds to go to make the final score 79-60.

Clark finished the game with a career-best eight points. Taylor Turney led the team with 13 points and Myzhanique Ladd had 11 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals.

In the game Ladd, went 7-for-10 from the line and in the process moved past Hulett Brooks into eighth place on the program's career free throws list. She also passed Lamisha Augustine for 15th place on the free throw attempts list. The senior from Seattle, Wash., has made 248 free throws on 328 attempts.

The Spartans next game is back in The Event Center on Saturday, January 6 against the New Mexico Lobos. Tip off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
