Stanford, Calif.--The 2018 San José State women's gymnastics team started the season out with a bang, recording the highest opening-meet score in school history with a 194.475 Monday night at the NorCal Classic hosted by Stanford inside Maples Pavilion.
In a true team effort, a different Spartan gymnast led team on each apparatus. Senior Kaitlin Won led the Spartans with a 39.000 in the all-around and a 9.875 on bars. Kaprece Nadonza led the team on vault at 9.750, while Stephanie Relova scored the team's best beam score at 9.775. Taylor Chan received a 9.875 on floor to lead the team.
The Spartans started the meet strong on bars with a 48.675, led by Won's career-best 9.875. Nadonza followed at 9.850, then Relova at 9.750, Madilyn Probst at 9.650, Chan at 9.550 and Kendal Watts at 8.700.
San José State scored a 48.300 on the beam in the next rotation. Relova led the team with a 9.775, followed by Alisa Bogdan at 9.725, Won at 9.675, Chelsey Andrada at 9.600, Michelle Shalit at 9.525 and Chan at 9.150.
The team's best score of the night came on floor with a 48.975. Chan led a group of three Spartans that scored a 9.800 or better with a 9.875, then Ellie Pascoe-Long at 9.825 and Won at 9.800. Andrada had a 9.775, then Josalyn Ray at 9.700 and Watts at 9.650.
San José State then posted a 48.475 on vault to finish out the meet. Nadonza led the team at 9.750, followed by Chan at 9.725, Andrada at 9.700, Won at 9.650, Pascoe-Long at 9.650 and Ray at 9.550.
The Spartans return to action on Friday, January 19, in a tri-meet at Utah State with Sacramento State. The meet will begin at 7 p.m. MT.
