Jan. 9, 2018

Colorado Springs, Colo.----- Colleen Humel, who was undefeated in backstroke races in five dual meets during late December and early January, was named the Mountain West Women's Swimmer of the Week.

A senior from Chicopee, Mass., Humel has a 14-race winning streak in the backstroke after capturing the 100 and 200 backstrokes in dual meets at CSU Bakersfield on December 30 and UC San Diego on January 3, the same two events in a double dual meet versus Incarnate Word and UC San Diego on January 2 and the 150 backstroke against California, ranked #3-nationally on December 20.

"Colleen had a terrific last month of racing. She was our only event winner versus Cal and kept her backstroke win streak going through our Bakersfield and UC San Diego meets," said San Jose State University women's swimming and diving head coach Sage Hopkins. "Colleen has done a great job in the pool and the classroom. It is tremendous to see her getting this recognition."

Humel has season bests of 53.48 in the 100 backstroke and 1:56.96 in the 200 backstroke. Her times are NCAA Championship B qualifying marks.

Humel is the second Spartan to be honored with a weekly Mountain West women's swimming and diving award this season. Diver Cari Reiswig was honored twice earlier in the season.

San Jose State returns to action, Friday, January 12, in a dual meet vs. Cal State East Bay. First event is at 1:00 p.m. The Spartans have a 4-2 dual meet record heading into the meet.
