Final Stats

San Jose, Calif. - Four Spartans scored in double figures and the team cut a 20-point deficit from early in the third quarter to five points late in the fourth, but couldn't get over the hump in a 73-66 loss to the Colorado State Rams on Saturday afternoon.

Myzhanique Ladd and Taylor Turney each scored 15 points to lead the team. Turney had a game-high five assists and grabbed five rebounds. Ladd also had five boards, an assist, and two steals.

Fieme'a Hafoka hit a pair of threes, scored 10 points, grabbed six rebounds, dished out three assists and had a steal. Cydni Lewis had a career-high four blocks, scored 11 points, and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

The Spartans who have struggled in the last five games, losing four of those by 27 points or more, looked like they were headed for another such outcome after being outscored 23-11 in the second quarter and trailing 38-24 at the half.

San José State (6-17, 3-9 MW) shot just 25 percent in the first 20 minutes, including going 2-for-16 (12.5 percent) from beyond the three-point line. The Rams made 14-of-33 shots (42.4 percent) and knocked down four of eight from distance through two quarters.

CSU (18-7, 10-4 MW) opened the third period on an 8-2 run and led 46-26 with 7:39 to go in the quarter, but from there the Spartans started the comeback. They finished the third on a 20-to-11 run. It was sparked by five quick points from Turney, who scored nine in the quarter, and six from Lewis, including a layup with 25 seconds to go to make it 57-46 with 10 minutes to play.

A Hafoka three with 6:47 to go got the Spartans back to within single digits at 62-58. Three minutes later, Lewis made a layup to cut it to five points, 63-58 with 3:42 left on the clock.

The Spartans had several chances to get even closer, but luck was not on their side. Down the stretch they got the shots they wanted, but missed five layups and were 3-for-7 from the line. The Rams didn't make a shot from the floor in the final 3:20 but went 8-for-10 from the line to hold off the Spartans in the 73-66 victory.

With 22 points, Hannah Tvrdy was the Rams and the game's high scorer. Sofie Tryggedsson had 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Despite being outrebounded 46-to-36, SJSU outscored Colorado State 9-to-8 in second chance points and were tied 26-26 in points in the paint, another area where San José State has struggled recently.

The Spartans committed a season-low seven turnovers, forced CSU into 13 and outscored the Rams 10-to-7 in points off turnovers.

The Spartans return to action on Wednesday at Fresno State. Tipoff in the Save Mart Center is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
