Fullerton, Calif.-- Sybille Gauvain, Laura Malsert, Jackie Wagner, Savannah Sendar each won in singles for San Jose State University in singles victory as the Spartans defeated the Grand Canyon University, 4-2, at the Fullerton invite women's tennis tournament.
The win for the Spartans (4-1) was their third in the row.
"We got off to a slow start in doubles today. I told the team to write the second chapter of this match and four players got it done in singles," said San Jose State women's tennis head coach Chad Skorupka.
"Sybille, Laura, Jackie and Savannah came out focused and played extremely well."
Even though Gauvain and her partner Miyo Kobayashi won the #1 doubles match, Grand Canyon took the 1-0 lead into the six single matches by winning at #2 and #3.
Sendar evened the score 1-1 with her 6-1, 6-1 win over Grand Canyon's Kylie Waschuk. Gauvain at #1 and Malsert at #4 followed with straight set wins for a 3-1 Spartan lead.
Wagner clinched the match for San Jose State with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Celina Buhr at #5-singles.
San Jose State's next opponent is host Fullerton State in a non-conference match, Sunday, February 11. First serve is at 11:00 a.m. (PT).
