The San Jose State University women's swimming and diving team enters its championship season phase with the Mountain West Championships, Wednesday, February 14, through Saturday, February 17, at the Palo Alto College Aquatic Center in San Antonio, Texas.
The Spartans head into the conference meet following a 5-4 dual meet record. Senior Colleen Humel was the team's most consistent swimmer winning 18 consecutive backstroke races in the 100 and 200 distances.
Humel is one of three Spartans with a NCAA Championships B-qualifying mark. She met the championship B standard in the 100 and 200 backstrokes. Brittany Heng has a NCAA Championships B standard in the 50 freestyle and Brenna Bushey has the same in the 100 butterfly.
"The team has been looking great in practice and I am really looking forward to getting started on Wednesday," said San Jose State women's swimming and diving head coach Sage Hopkins, who picked up his 100th career dual meet coaching victory with the Spartans in the win over Incarnate Word on January 2.
Bushey has the conference's #2 best time in the 100 fly with a 53.86. Her career best is 53.29 at the 2017 Pac-12 Invitational. Humel also has a #2-best time in the Mountain West with a 53.48 in the 100 back. Her lifetime best is 53.04.
Heng has the #3 top time in the 50 freestyle at a career best 22.88.
The Spartans also are optimistic about the potential of their relay teams. San Jose State has the #4-ranked quartets in the medley relays
San Jose State also should do well in diving led by career record holder Cari Reiswig, a three-time Mountain West Women's Diver of the Week. The Spartans have a five-diver contingent with Reiswig, senior Kylie Fonseca, sophomore Natasha Sondeno and juniors Eri Tamada and Megan Au.
