Fresno, Calif.----- The San Jose State University women's basketball team had one of its best offensive quarters of the season with 28 second-quarter points, but was unable to keep up that scoring pace in an 81-71 loss to Fresno State in a Mountain West game.
The Spartans (6-18, 3-10 Mountain West) shot 70.6 percent in the second quarter making 12-of-17 field goal tries and went into halftime with a 47-46 lead.
Even though San Jose State would score just 24 points in the second half, the Spartans still held a 61-59 lead going into the fourth quarter.
San Jose State finished with a 44.3 percent figure from the floor compared to Fresno State's 38.4 percent, but was just 11-of-34 in the second half. The Bulldogs' zone defense helped slow down the Spartans particularly in the fourth quarter.
San Jose State's Taylor Turney led all players with 22 points, 16 of them in the first half and her third consecutive double-figure scoring game. Myzhanique Ladd added 18, 10 after intermission. Cydni Lewis was a third double-figure scorer for the Spartans with 12 points.
Turney, Ladd and Lewis combined to shoot 23-of-40 from the field. The rest of the team was 8-for-30.
Candice White was Fresno State's leading scorer with 20 points. Forward Maddi Utti scored 10 of her 17 points in the second half and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds. Reserve forward Kristina Cavey scored 14 including seven in a row in the fourth quarter.
Until the Bulldogs (15-10, 10-4) pulled away in the final six minutes for their fifth win in a row, the game was tied 12 times and there were nine lead changes.
The Spartans seek to close out the week on a winning note when they host Wyoming, Saturday, February 17, in a 2:00 p.m. (PT) game at The Event Center.
