Freestyle Sprinters Have A Day At Mountain West Swimming & Diving Championships

San Antonio, Texas----- For San Jose State University, it was a sprint to the Spartans' top-10 list on the second day of the 2018 Mountain West Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Palo Alto College Natatorium.

Brittany Heng, Antoinette Loya, Brenna Bushey and Shona Spikes each scored points in the 50 free and combined to post the #4 best time on the San Jose State top-10 list in the 200 freestyle relay. With Spikes leading off and Heng, Bushey and Loya to follow, they swam a 1:31.88 time for a sixth-place finish.

A senior from Walnut Creek, Calif., Heng finished fifth in 50 freestyle championship final at 22.85. She posted a time of 22.78 in the morning qualifying round for her spot in the championship final. Her qualifying time matched Kiley Foster's 22.78 in 2013 for #3 on the San Jose State top-10 list.

Loya, a sophomore from Union City, Calif., joined the Spartans' top-10 list in the 50 free, too. She swam a lifetime best of 23.13 in the qualifying round, #8 on the San Jose State top-10 list. Loya finished out her night swimming in the consolation final for the 50 free and placed 14th at 23.25.

Bushey, a junior from Littleton, Colo., and Spikes, a freshman from Sacramento, scored points in the 50 free placing 21st and 23rd, respectively.

Senior Colleen Humel from Chicopee, Mass., also worked her way into the Spartans' top-10 list Thursday in the 200 individual medley. Finishing 11th overall, she swam a time of 2:01.97, #4 on the San Jose State top-10 list and just shy of the NCAA Championship B standard qualifying time of 2:01.59.

Humel led three Spartan scorers in the 200 IM. Kate Hanf, a sophomore from Stockton, Calif., was 21st with her 2:05.18 clocking and Taylor Lehr was 23rd at 2:05.40.

For the second night in a row, San Jose State had three divers score points.

Kylie Fonseca turned in her best performance at a Mountain West championship with her 12th place finish in the 3-meter diving event. The senior from Gilbert, Ariz., was the #16-qualifier in the preliminary round and was fourth best in the evening's consolation championship group of eight divers with her 249.93 score. Cari Reiswig, 17th at 241.35, and Natasha Sondeno 21st with her 234.27 added to the San Jose State point total.

In the team standings with two days remaining in the four-day meet, San Jose State has 262 points and moved up one spot on Day #2 into fifth place. Boise State is in first with 491.

"We had a great day today. I'm really proud of our performances and can't wait for tomorrow (Friday)," said San Jose State head coach Sage Hopkins.

The four-day meet continues on February 16 and concludes on February 17.
