San Antonio, Texas----- Junior Brenna Bushey and senior Colleen Humel set school records on the same day for the second time in less than a calendar year highlighting San Jose State University's third day at the Mountain West Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.
Bushey broke her own school record in the 100 butterfly with her morning qualifying time of 53.10, .19 seconds faster than her 53.29 at the 2017 Pac-12 Invitational in Federal Way, Wash. The record-setting mark also moved her into the Mountain West Championship's top-10 times at #10.
In the 100 butterfly championship final, Bushey swam a 53.21 and finished second behind San Diego State's Courtney Vincent's 52.89.
Humel eclipsed her own mark in the 100 backstroke with a time of 52.70 leading off the Spartans' 400 medley relay team. Her previous best was 53.04 at the 2017 Pac-12 Invitational. The new 100 backstroke mark was her second San Jose State record of the meet. On opening night, she established a new school standard in the 50 back.
Humel swam her third 100 backstroke race of the day in the championship final and came in third with a time of 53.09. It was her best finish in a 100 back Mountain West Championship. She had finished eighth in 2016 and sixth in 2017 at the Mountain West meet.
Madison Grimes made it a 1-2 punch for the Spartans in the 100 back. The freshman from Sparks, Nev., moved up the San Jose State top-10 list to #6 in the event with a season-best 55.32 time to finish 18th.
With Bushey leading the way, the Spartans picked up their most points of the day in a single event - the 100 fly. Violani Auva'a now is sixth on the San Jose State top-10 list with her 54.88 time for 10th place at the conference championship. Antoinette Loya made it three Spartans to score with her 18th place finish at 55.39 and the #10 spot in the school's top-10 list in the event.
Brittany Heng was the team leader in the 200 free. After placing fifth in the 50 free on February 15, she swam a career-best 1:50.89 for 20th place. Her time was more than three seconds faster than her previous season best of 1:54.21.
In the team standings, San Jose State is in ninth place with 397 points. Boise State is first with 817.
The championships conclude with seven events on February 17 at the Palo Alto College Natatorium.
