Humel Sprints To 2nd Place In 200 Backstroke At Mountain West Championships

San Antonio, Texas ----- Colleen Humel capped an outstanding performance at the Mountain West Women's Swimming and Diving Championships for San Jose State University with a second-place finish in the 200 backstroke.

Humel swam her second personal best of the day in the 200 back with a 1:54.93 in the championship final. The senior from Chicopee, Mass., qualified for the championship final with a previous personal best of 1:55.02.

At the Mountain West Championships, Humel was third in the 100 back, second in the 200 back, set school records in the 50 and 100 back as the leadoff swimmer in the 200 and 400 medley relays, respectively, had a personal best in the 200 individual medley and swam a 49.87 split time anchoring the Spartans' second fastest 400 freestyle relay in school history.

Senior Brittany Heng of Walnut Creek, Calif., led off the 400 free relay with a personal best 49.72, #3 on the San Jose State top-10 list in the 100 free. Taylor Lehr and Gabby Heng swam the second and third legs, respectively. The Spartans finished fifth at 3:20.67.

Earlier in the evening, Brittany Heng was ninth in the 100 free with a 50.03 time. Her younger sister, Gabby, was 11th at 50.23 tying her for the #5-spot on San Jose State top-10 list. Brenna Bushey, one of the Spartan stars of the third day of the Mountain West Championships, Lehr and Katie McIntee also scored San Jose State points in the 100 with their 14th, 21st and 22nd place finishes, respectively.

The remainder of the Spartans' scoring on the final night came in platform diving. For the third time, three San Jose State divers put points on the scoreboard. Senior Cari Reiswig led the way in 14th place. Junior Eri Tamada notched her first top-20 conference championship finish in diving placing 18th. Senior Kylie Fonseca was 20th.

San Jose State finished 10th in the team standings with 571 points. The Spartans scored 75.5 more points in this year's meet compared to 2017. Boise State successfully defended its team championship with 1,250 points.

Selected swimmers will compete in next weekend's Pac-12 Invitational in Seattle, Wash., on February 25. Divers Reiswig, Fonseca and Natasha Sondeno are next in action at the NCAA Zone Diving Championships, March 5-7 in Flagstaff, Ariz.
