Colorado Springs, Colo.---- For placing in the top eight in their events at the 2018 Mountain West Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, four Spartans were named to the all-conference team.
Senior Colleen Humel was named All-Mountain West in the 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke and 200 medley relay; junior Brenna Bushey, 100 butterfly and 200 medley relay; senior Brittany Heng, 50 freestyle and 200 medley relay; and freshman Shona Spikes in the 200 medley relay.
"I'm very proud of our many accomplishments this past week especially our 200 medley relay team of Humel, Spikes, Bushey and Britt(ney) Heng and the individual performances of Brenna, Coco (Humel) and Britt," said San Jose State women's swimming and diving head coach Sage Hopkins.
Humel was second in the 200 backstroke, third in the 100 backstroke and swam the opening leg of the Spartans' school record 200 medley relay with a school record time in the 50 backstroke. The Chicopee, Mass., resident also set a second San Jose State record in the 100 backstroke with her time of 52.70 in the 400 medley relay. For Humel, she now has seven All-Mountain West awards on her resume with all-conference honors in the 100 back the last three years and in the 200 back in as a freshman, sophomore and senior.
Bushey notched All-Mountain West honors in the 100 butterfly for the third year in a row. The Littleton, Colo., resident set a school record for the second time in less than a year in her specialty with a 53.10 time in a qualifying heat before finishing second in the championship final.
Heng swam the anchor leg on the 200 medley relay team that placed third -- the highest finish by a San Jose State team in a relay race since joining the Mountain West in 2013. The Walnut Creek resident followed up with a fifth-place finish in 50 freestyle for her second all-conference honor and concluded the meet with a school record 49.72 time swimming the opening leg of the 400 freestyle relay.
Spikes, from Sacramento, Calif., swam the breaststroke leg for the Spartans' 200 medley relay quartet.
"At this point, we have 11 student-athletes (on a 27-member team) qualified for (the) post-season and we are looking to add more this Sunday at the Pac-12 Invite," Hopkins added.
Selected Spartans will be competing at the Pac-12 Invite in Federal Way, Wash., Sunday, February 25.
