Men's Golf Tops Nevada, 5-1, In Match Play Competition

Feb. 19, 2018

Auburn, Calif.----- Playing a rare in-season, 18-hole match-play team format, San Jose State University defeated the University of Nevada, 5-1, at The Ridge Golf Course.

The Spartans won at #5 and #6 convincingly with Matthew Murray defeating Sam Harned, 4&3, and Vijay Srinivasan topping Stephen Osborne, 5&4, respectively.

Three matches went to the final hole with the Spartans winning two of three. San Jose State's #1-player Kevin Velo, ranked #46 in the February 19 GolfStat rankings, outlasted Nevada's #1-player Grant Booth, #54 in the same GolfStat national scoring rankings, 1-up.

Ben Campbell won the 18th hole of his match at #4 for San Jose State over Jooho Lee for a 2-up victory.

Nevada's one win was a 1-up triumph by Kaleb Gorbahn over Sean Talmadge at #3.

Sean Yu captured the Spartans remaining point at #2 with a 3-and-2 win over Joey Vrizich.

"It was a good day. I was proud of the way they all played. None of them were distracted by the typical things that could distract you in match play. We played a focused day of golf and it showed in the results," said San Jose State men's golf coach John Kennaday.

The start of play was delayed three hours due to frost on the par 71 course in the Sierra Nevada mountain range about 100 miles away from each school. Originally, the Spartans and the Wolf Pack planned to play two six-man, 18-hole match play tournaments in one day.

San Jose State's next tournament is February 26 & 27 at the Southwestern Intercollegiate played at the North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif.
