Women's Tennis Seeks Winning Streak In Portland

Feb. 23, 2018

The San Jose State University women's tennis team seeks to make it two wins in a row when it takes on the University of Puget Sound in the first of back-to-back road matches, Saturday, February 24, at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center in Portland, Ore.

San Jose State concludes a quick trip to the Northwest with a Sunday, February 25 dual match against host University of Portland in the same venue starting at 8:30 a.m.

The Spartans (5-2) are coming off a convincing 4-0 win over the University of San Francisco on February 16. Looking to find the best doubles combinations, head coach Chad Skorupka shook up the doubles lineup.

Only Sybille Gauvain and Laura Malsert stayed at #1 and #2 doubles, respectively. Freshman Savannah Sendar moved up from #3 to team with Gauvain at #1. Miyo Kobayashi, Gauvain's partner through six dual matches, teamed with Malsert for a 6-0 win over USF's Alexa Meyer and Margarita Treyes at #2. Tamara Culibrk and Clara Mantaux at #3 finished doubles play with a win.

Kobayashi, Malsert and Sendar at #3, #4 and #5 closed out the USF match with singles wins. Gauvain, bidding to move into sole possession of sixth place on the San Jose State career wins list at 118, had her match in progress when play concluded in the "fast four" scoring format.

The Spartans take on a Puget Sound team (1-1) at 10:00 a.m. that won its last match, 5-4, over Pacific Lutheran on February 9.

Portland (1-5) seeks to rebound after losing to Brigham Young, 4-2. The Pilots' first win of the season was a 6-1 victory over crosstown rival Portland State.
