Fourth Quarter Surge Costs Spartans In Loss At SDSU

Feb. 24, 2018

Final Stats

San Diego, Calif. - Four Spartans scored in double figures, led by a career-high 22 from freshman Cydni Lewis, but a 25-to-6 run early in the fourth quarter by the San Diego State Aztecs was too much to overcome for the San José State women's basketball team in an 85-78 loss on Saturday afternoon.

In addition to Lewis' game-high 22 points, she also grabbed seven rebounds, had a block and a steal. Myzhanique Ladd scored 16 points, also had seven boards, dished out five assists and had two steals. Hallie Gennett hit four three-pointers for 12 points and Mikaylah Wilson added 10 points and pulled down six rebounds.

SJSU trailed 51-48 heading into the final period and following a Ladd layup, was down by just one. But that's when the Aztecs caught fire.

In a five-minute stretch, SDSU hit 10-of-13 buckets, including four three-pointers, and on its three misses, got the offensive rebound and the put back. They turned a one-point advantage into 19 points with 4:30 left on the clock and still led by 18, 77-59, with 3:40 to play.

SJSU (7-20, 4-12 MW) went small and turned up the pressure in the final minutes. On back-to-back possessions Gennett and Megan Anderson, who finished with nine points and six rebounds, hit threes to make it a 14-point game.

A Ladd layup and a pair of Lewis free throws followed by a pair of Ladd free throws got the lead down to 10 with 49 seconds to go.

The next time down the floor, Ladd hit a three pointer to cut the lead to seven 81-74. But from there, SDSU (11-16, 5-11 MW) traded buckets for Spartans' free throws and SJSU came up on the short end of the decision, 85-78.

The first half had a big run by each team. In the first quarter, SDSU led 8-7 with just over five and a half minutes to go. The Aztecs closed the quarter on a 14-4 run and led 22-11 after 10 minutes.

In the first two minutes of the second quarter, SDSU pushed its advantage to 15 points, 28-13, but from there the Spartans turned up the heat.

They closed the half on a 20-to-8 run and trailed by just three at halftime, 36-33. A Ladd three started the run, which included threes for Gennett, Danae Marquez and a pair from Anderson.

San Jose State, which has struggled from the free throw line in its last six games, going no better than .667 in a game, hit 17-of-19 attempts (89.5 percent) and outrebounded the Aztecs 44-43. It is just the second time in the last 10 games the Spartans have beaten an opponent on the boards.

San Diego State was led by Geena Gomez, who scored 22 points, and McKynzie Fort, with 12 points and 16 rebounds.

The Spartans remain on the road for their next game. SJSU plays at Utah State on Tuesday, February 27 with tip off scheduled for 6:00 p.m. (PT).
