San Jose, Calif.--- The San Jose State University baseball team (2-4) was shutout 10-0 by the University of San Francisco (3-2) Saturday at Benedetti Diamond in San Francisco, Calif. The game was scoreless through three innings, but a grand slam by Michael Perri (2-for-3, R, 5 RBI, BB) made the score, 6-0.
"We played good defense, but we gave them too many opportunities on the mound" said interim head coach Brad Sanfilippo. "We dug ourselves a hole and had to play perfect to win. We will be back at it tomorrow."
The winning pitcher Riley Ornido (1-0) held the Spartans to no hits through his seven innings. He allowed one walk to Kellen Strahm (0-2, BB). The Spartans didn't get a hit until the eighth inning when Johnny Mendoza (1-for-3) hit a grounder up the middle.
The Spartans tried to find an offensive spark in the ninth frame through pinch hitters Jack Colette (1-1) and Samuel Olsson (0-for-1). With no outs, leadoff hitter Colette drove a ball up the middle and got on base. Then three pop flies sent San Jose State home with a loss in their first road game of the season.
The baseball team returns to San Francisco Sunday, February 25 to play a double header against Sacramento State at 10:30 and the Dons at 2:00 p.m.
