Box Score/Results - Sacramento
San Jose, Calif. --- The San José State baseball team swept their doubleheader Sunday at Benedetti Diamond to improve to 4-4 on the season. The Spartans took down Sacramento State, 5-4, and then beat University of San Francisco, 6-1.
In game one against Sacramento State (2-5), the Spartans scored their first four runs of the game with two outs in the first and second innings. San Jose State got off to a quick start with three in the first inning. Brett Bautista (3-for-3, R, 2RBI, BB) singled to left center. He then stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error, and scored on a wild pitch by Hornets starting pitcher Scott Randall.
Then, Shane Timmons (0-for-3, R, BB) walked, and Chris Williams (0-for-3) and Johnny Mendoza (0-for-3) were hit by pitches to load the bases. David Campbell (1-for-3, 2RBI) singled through the right side to drive home Williams and Timmons to make the score, 3-0.
In the bottom of the second inning, Bautista singled to right field to send Kellen Strahm (1-for-3, 2R, BB) to home plate for a 4-0 lead.
In the Hornets' fourth, with one out and the bases loaded, Steven Moretto (1-for-4, R, RBI) singled to left field and sending leadoff hitter Keith Torres (1-for-3, R, BB) home. PJ Floyd (0-for-3, RBI, BB) walked forcing home Matt Smith (0-for-1, R, 3BB). The next batter, Dylan McPhillips (3-for-4, RBI) singled through the right side to cut the Spartan lead to 4-3. Josh Urps (0-for-3, RBI) reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Moretto to score and tie the game, 4-4.
The winning pitcher, Josh Goldberg (1-0), would enter the game to relieve Fineas Del Bonta-Smith with one out in the fourth. Goldberg got the final two outs in the Hornets' four-run fourth and blanked Sacramento State for the next four innings. He struck out six and walked three for his first win of the season.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Bautista was involved in the Spartans' third run-scoring inning of the game. He singled to left center and sending Strahm home for what would be the game-winning run.
Tevin Cadola entered the game in the ninth inning to get his second save of the season. Sacramento State's Bronson Grubbs' ground ball to shortstop Aaron Pleschner turned into a game-ending double play when pinch runner Ian Dawkins was tagged out to end the game.
In game two, the Spartans allowed just one run to a USF team (4-3) that shut them out 10-0 the day before. Three San Jose State pitchers scattered seven hits in the 6-1 win.
In the Spartans' second, Chris Williams (1-for-5, R) hit the first San José State triple of the season to right field. David Campbell (1-for-3, RBI, BB) then singled to right field to drive home Williams on the play.
At the top of the fifth, Strahm's (0-for-3, RBI, BB) sacrifice fly would send home Jace Duty (0-for-3, R). Bautista (3-for-5, 3 RBI) singled to center field sending Morrison (2-for-3, 2R, BB) and Pleschner (2-for-3, 2R) home for a 4-0 lead.
In the Spartans' ninth, Bautista singled up the middle with one out to score Pleschner. The next play, Timmons' (2-for-4, RBI) infield single scored Morrison for a 6-1 lead.
The lone San Francisco run came in the sixth inning on an Aaron Ping (0-for-3) sacrifice fly to right field that Riley Helland (1-for-3, R) scored on.
Nicholas Morales (1-0) picked up the first win of his Spartan career in the nightcap. He pitched 5.1 innings, allowing five hits. He walked four and struck out three. Cameron Keup pitched 2.1 innings of shutout ball and Wesley Clawson finished up getting the final four outs of the game. Keup and Clawson each allowed a single in their time on the mound.
The Spartans return home Tuesday February 27 to play Cal Poly at 5:00 p.m. inside Municipal Stadium.
