Portland, Ore.----- Sybille Gauvain, Miyo Kobayashi and Savannah Sender each won in doubles and singles leading San Jose State University to a 5-2 non-conference women's tennis victory over the University of Portland.
The win for the Spartans (7-2) was their third in a row for their second three-match winning streak of the season and second triumph in two days on the road at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center. The day before, San Jose State shutout Puget Sound, 7-0.
"Our team played very well to day in doubles to get that important first point to start the match," said San Jose State University women's tennis head coach Chad Skorupka. "It was tough playing (singles) on only three courts, but our first wave of singles (Gauvain, Tamara Culibrk and Kobayashi) came out strong."
Gauvain and Sendar teamed again at #1 doubles for a 6-2 victory over Portland's Jelena Lukic and Raphaelle Leblanc to give San Jose State a 1-0 lead going into singles action. The Pilots had won at #3-doubles and Kobayashi and Laura Malsert recorded a 6-3 triumph over Lourdes Ramalle and Anna Oberg at #2-doubles leaving it up to Gauvain and Sendar.
Kobayashi was the first to finish in singles beating Leblanc, 6-2, 6-0 for a 2-0 Spartan lead. Tamara Culibrk at #2-singles topped Radina Dimitrova, 6-4, 6-4. Gauvain clinched the San Jose State victory with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 win over Lukic at #1-singles.
"Sybille played a great third set," Skorupka said.
Sendar posted the Spartans' final singles win over Oberg, 6-2, 6-2.
San Jose State's next match is at the Spartan Tennis Complex, Saturday, March 3 hosting Cal Poly (3-6) in a non-conference contest. First serve is at noon.
