Waikoloa, Hawaii ----- The San Jose State University men's golf team finished in a 12th place tie out of 18 teams at the Amer Ari Invitational.
The Spartans finished 54 holes with a three-over par 867 on the par 72, 7,074-yard Waikoloa Kings Course. San Jose State was in sixth place after the first round at six-under par and 11th place after 36 holes.
"We didn't exactly play our best. As the week went on, we held on to our mistakes too long and we put a lot of pressure on ourselves that way," said San Jose State men's golf coach John Kennaday.
Oklahoma State, #2-ranked nationally by GolfStat, had the lowest team score for the second consecutive day to win the tournament with an 817 total. Ten of the top-50 teams and seven top-20 squads were at the Amer Ari Invitational and all of them finished ahead of the remaining eight lower ranked teams.
#14-ranked Texas Tech was second at 834 and #19-ranked Southern California was third at 837.
Kevin Velo was the top Spartan finisher at one-under par 215 after a final round 74. He tied for 41st place in the 114-player field. Sean Yu matched par for the tournament at 216 with his third round 74.
Matthew Murray posted the best San Jose State score for the final 18 holes with a one-over 73. Murray's scores improved each day and he finished tied for 81st place at eight-over par 224.
"We got a lot out of this tournament that may not show on the leaderboard. We were given the opportunity to play against the best. It gave us a really good view of what we have to work on. One thing we must do is we must develop shorter memories and keep our eyes looking forward," added the Spartans coach.
San Jose State's next tournament is the Southwestern Intercollegiate, February 26 & 27, at the North Ranch Country Club Course in Westlake Village, Calif.
