Reno, Calif. --- The San Jose State University baseball team (6-8, 0-4 MW) lost 10-9 to Nevada (7-6, 4-1 MW) at Don Weir Field in game two of the three game conference series. Big innings have plagued the Spartans this season as the team gave up five runs in the fifth inning, and gave The Pack their fourth conference win.
The Spartans stuck first in the second inning when Kyle Morrison (1-for-4, RBI) grounded out to the short stop with one out to drive home David Campbell (1-for-4, R, RBI, BB).
In the third, the Spartans would make it 2-0 when Brett Bautista (3-for-4, 4R, 2RBI, BB) hit his first home run of the season to right field with two outs. It was Bautista's first homer since May 16, 2015. He also set a new career game high with four runs against The Wolf Pack.
Nevada scored in the fourth on a Weston Hatten (2-for-5, R, 2RBI) solo home run to make it 2-1.
A five run fifth inning would give The Pack a 6-4 lead that they would hold onto until the seventh inning. This season, the Spartans have fallen victim of 10 big innings (innings of four or more runs).
San Jose State would tie the game up in the top of the seventh. Timmons grounded out to the short stop, and Kellen Strahm (2-for-4, 3R, BB) scored on the play. Chris Williams (1-for-4, 2RBI, BB) reached base on a fielding error by the short stop that sent Bautista home to tie the game 6-6.
The Wolf Pack would battle back in their eighth. Keaton Smith (1-for-1, R, RBI) hit a solo home run to left field. Mike Echavia (2-for-3, R, RBI) hit a double RBI single to right field to bring the Nevada lead to 9-6.
The Spartans would bounce back once again in the top of the ninth. Lead-off hitter Kellen Strahm tripled to right center. Bautista singled through the left side to bring Strahm home to make it 9-7. With Bautista on first, Timmons homered to left field to tie the game 9-9.
Shane Timmons is now tied with Kyle Bellows for fourth all-time in career home runs with 20.
In Nevada's ninth with one out, Tevin Cadola (0-1) loaded the bases on two walks and a hit by pitch. A sacrifice fly from Joshua Zamora (3-for-5, R, RBI) won the game for The Pack 10-9.
The winning pitcher was Ryan Anderson (1-1). Anderson played 1.0 inning, and struck out one Spartan batter, gave up three hits, and three runs.
