Reno, Nev. --- The San Jose State University baseball team (6-9, 0-5 MW) was defeated 14-4 by the Nevada Wolf Pack (8-6, 5-1 MW) Sunday, March 11 at Don Wier Field. The Spartans went 0-3 in the series against The Pack this weekend.
The Spartans were able to keep the game close until the sixth inning when Nevada broke open a close game and scored seven runs.
Brett Bautista (2-for-4, R, 2RBI) tied the game up 1-1 in the fourth when he homered to right field. It was the senior's second homer in two days. This month, no Spartan has been more effective at the plate; Bautista is 14-for-24 and batting .583 with two home runs 11 days into March.
Nevada would take the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth when Echavia (2-for-5, R, RBI) scored on a sac fly from Hatten (1-for-2, 2R, 2RBI) to make it 2-1. They would then tack on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 4-1.
The Spartans would nearly tie it up in the sixth when Bautista reached on a fielding error that scored Connor Konishi (1-for-4, R). Shane Timmons (0-for-4, RBI) would then ground out to Jaylon McLaughlin to drive Kellen Strahm (1-for-4, R) home for the score to make it 4-3.
In the bottom of the sixth The Pack scored seven runs and made it 11-3.
The Spartan offense tried to get a comeback going in the top of the ninth when Aaron Pleschner (1-for-4, RBI) singled down the middle to bring Kyle Morrison (1-for-4, R) home for a score to make it 14-4.
The winning pitcher of the game was Jake Jackson (3-0). The freshman pitched seven innings and only allowed three hits.
