Bandon, Ore.----- Even with a pair of final round one-under par 70's by Sean Yu and Sean Talmadge, the San Jose State University men's golf team finished eighth in the 14-team field of the Bandon Dunes Championship.
The Spartans completed 54 holes with an 856 team total on the par 71, 6,633-yards course, one shot behind seventh place Gonzaga at 855 and eight behind sixth place Oregon's 848. Arizona State completed a start-to-finish team victory with an 824 total. Clemson was second at 837.
Yu's 70 marked the second time this season, he recorded back-to-back under par rounds in a tournament. The sophomore from Taipei finished tied for 15th place at one-under par 212. At the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in the fall, Yu was under par in all three rounds and tied for 14th.
Talmadge had his best 18 on the final day with third one-under round of the spring season. He was the steadiest of the Spartan five with two birdies and a bogey in the final round.
Yu was one of three San Jose State players with five birdies on the day. Kevin Velo birdied four of his first six holes and was four-under after eight holes played but finished with a two-over par 73. Velo and teammate Vijay Srinivasan tied for 22nd place at one-over par 214. Srinivasan battled back from four-over after six holes with three birdies in a four-hole stretch to finish with a 72 that counted in the team total.
Bryce Wortman was the third Spartan with five birdies in the final round. With Velo, they powered the Spartans to as low as nine-under as a team and a climb into sixth in the team standings through eight holes. But a spate of bogeys and a 7 on his next to last hole left him at two-over par 73.
Arizona State's Chan An Yu took home medalist honors with a final round 67 for a 200 total. He finished one stroke ahead of Washington State's Derek Bayley at 201.
