The San Jose State University women's water polo team has its busiest weekend of the season combining tournament action and the start of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play, Friday, March 16 through, Sunday, March 18.
The Spartans (5-11, 0-0 MPSF) play their first MPSF match of the season on March 18 against #4-ranked UCLA (17-3, 0-1 MPSF). The Pac-12 Network is televising the match live starting at 12:30 p.m. (PT) with Greg Mescall calling the action.
San Jose State seeks its first win over the Bruins in 36 tries since the two teams began playing each other in 1998. The closest the Spartans came to upending UCLA recently was an 8-6 loss at the Spieker Aquatics Center on April 12, 2014.
The Spartans are coming off a 2-2 split at the Harvard Invitational on March 3 & 4. San Jose State extended its streak to seven matches limiting the opposition to nine or fewer goals.
Before taking on #4-UCLA and hoping to remain stingy on the defensive end, the Spartans have three more top-25 opponents in the LMU Invitational at the Burns Aquatics Center on the LMU campus, Friday, March 16 & 17. San Jose State plays the first match of the tournament against host LMU (11-10), 8:00 a.m. (PT) and closes out the morning against unranked Fresno Pacific (8-9). The Spartans conclude tournament competition the next day vs. #23-Marist (11-10) at 10:30 a.m. and #9-Michigan (18-7) at 2:15 p.m.
Live statistics for the four LMU Invitational matches will be available on www.theFOSH.net.
Newcomers Guara Garcia Delgado and Lili Urvari remain one-two in goal scoring for the Spartans with 19 and 18 goals, respectively. Urvari has the longest active goal-scoring streak presently with scores in each of the last six contests. Sheila Jensen with 15 and Klaudia Paradi with 14 are next.
