Moraga, Calif.----- San Jose State University's five-match winning streak in women's tennis came to a close in a 4-0 non-conference loss to Saint Mary's. The Spartans (9-3) lost the opening doubles point for just the third time this season and went into singles play trailing, 1-0.
Sybille Gauvain at #1, Tamara Culibrk at #2, Jackie Wagner at #5 and Savannah Sendar at #6 each won a set in their respective singles matches. However, Laura Malsert at #4 and Miyo Kobayashi at #3 lost their singles match in straight sets leaving the Spartans trailing, 3-0.
The Gaels (7-5) closed out the match when Mariia Kozyreva, ranked #99 in the March 6 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national singles rankings, outlasted Gauvain, 6-4, 0-6, 6-3.
Weather-permitting, San Jose State concludes weekend play Sunday, March 18, hosting Santa Clara in a non-conference match at the Spartan Tennis Complex starting at noon. Spectators will be treated to free pizza slices after the conclusion of the three doubles matches.
