Sacramento, Calif.----- Junior Brittany Brown's outdoor track and field season debut was a successful one for San Jose State University winning the 100-meter hurdles and setting a personal best in the long jump at the Hornet Invitational hosted by Sacramento State.
Brown crossed the finish line in 14.09 seconds, .06 better than University of California's Deshae Wise who ran in the first heat, six heats ahead of the Spartan newcomer.
The Laney College transfer added a 5.82 meters long jump to her first day of competitive outdoor track and field as a Spartan. She placed sixth in a field loaded with five San Jose State competitors that finished in the top-10.
"Brittany Brown looked great winning the hurdles and set a PR in the long jump," said San Jose State University director of track and field Jeff Petersmeyer, whose team dealt with windy conditions and temperatures estimated to be in the mid 50's.
"Our long jump group as a whole did really well considering the unusually frigid temperatures of Sacramento."
Mountain West indoor long jump champion Destiny Longmire led the Spartans with a wind-aided 6.05 meters second-place jump. Cambree Harbaugh was third at 5.92 meters; Nicole Iloanya, fifth at 5.87 meters and Kelsey Johnson-Upshaw, ninth with a 5.55 meters jump.
The Spartans also got strong showings from middle distance runners Camilla Hanson and Carmen Contreras in the 1,500. Hanson was sixth at 4:42.79 and Contreras, ninth at 4:48.42, both major college personal bests.
With a limited number of entries, San Jose State finished eighth in the team standings with 38.5 points. Cal finished first with 155.
San Jose State should have better weather for its next meet when the Spartans travel to Honolulu for the Rainbow Relays, March 23 and 24.
