San Jose, Calif. --- The San Jose State University baseball team (7-9, 1-5 MW) picked up their first conference win of the season against rival Fresno State (11-7, 2-5) Saturday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. Josh Goldberg pitched a complete game victory allowing just one run and striking out five batters.
"Josh threw three pitches for strikes, was able to throw around the zone, and got some good defense to help him out," said interim head coach Brad Sanfilippo. "All of those factors combined were awesome for the team."
The Spartans got off to a 1-0 start when Shane Timmons (0-2, RBI, BB) flied out to center field on a sac fly with one out to score Kellen Strahm (1-for-4, 2R, BB).
San Jose State would score again in the third inning when Chris Williams (2-for-4, 3RBI) singled to right field with one out to drive home Strahm and Aaron Pleschner (2-for-3, R, BB) for a 3-0 lead.
In the Spartans seventh, Williams singled to left field to score Bautista for the fourth unanswered run of the game.
Fresno State looked to rally at the top of the eighth inning when Zach Ashford (2-for-4, RBI) singled to right field to bring home pinch runner Austin White (0-0, R) for the score but the Spartans prevailed.
Josh Goldberg (2-1) pitched the first complete game of the season for San Jose State. The senior from Long Beach, California threw 103 pitches in a career game high 9.0 innings and is the first Spartan pitcher to throw a complete game victory since Kalei Contrades on May 21, 2014.
