San Jose, Calif.--The San Jose State University women's tennis team lost to Santa Clara 4-3, in a non-conference match at The Spartan Tennis Complex.
The outcome hinged on the third set of the number-four singles match between San Jose State's Laura Malsert and Santa Clara's Elvena Gevargiz. Malsert had won the first set, but Gevargiz battled back to take the next two sets for a 5-7, 7-6, 7-5 decision and the win for the Broncos.
Despite Santa Clara taking a 1-0 lead by sweeping the first two doubles matches, the Spartans went ahead, 3-1, on straight-set singles wins by Savannah Sendar at #6, Sybille Gauvain at #1 and Jackie Wagner at #5 position.
The Spartans needed one more win to clinch the match, but neither Tamara Culibrk, Miyo Kobayashi and Malsert were able to emerge victorious. Playing #3-singles, Kobayashi ended with a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Zeina El Tawil. Culibrk at #2 was defeated by Maddie Pothoff of Santa Clara, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
"It was definitely a tough loss for us. We battled really hard for the match, but at the end we lost the game," said Sendar, who extended her singles record to 9-0 in dual match competition.
The Spartans will be travelling to San Diego for a non-conference match against University of California San Diego on March 27 starting at 12:00 p.m.
