San Jose, Calif. --- The San Jose State University baseball team (8-10, 2-6 MW) split the doubleheader against Fresno State (12-8, 3-6 MW) Sunday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. The Spartans won the first game 10-1, and lost the second game 6-3. In the team's second 16 hit game this season, eight different Spartans recorded a hit.

The Spartans got off to a quick start scoring four unanswered runs. In the Spartan's first, David Campbell (3-for-4, 2R, 3RBI) hit a sac fly to left field with one out to send Brett Bautista (2-for-4, 3R, RBI) home to score the first run of the day.

The Spartans would then score three in bottom of the third to take a 4-0 lead. Chris Williams (2-for-3, R, RBI) singled to right field to score Bautista. Campbell singled to left field to drive Shane Timmons (4-for-5, 2R, RBI) home. The fourth run scored when Johnny Mendoza (2-for-4, 2RBI) doubled to left field and sent Campbell to home plate.

The lone Fresno State run came in the fourth inning when the lead-off hitter, Carter Bins (2-for-4, R, RBI), homered to left field.

The Spartans would answer in their fifth when Campbell scored on a throwing error from the pitcher. Mendoza would then sac bunt with one out to bring home Kyle Morrison (1-for-3, R) to make it 6-1.

The Spartans would score four more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to get the 10-1 win. Bautista had the big hit in the inning when he tripled through the right side to score Kellen Strahm (1-for-4, R) for a 7-1 lead.

Andrew Mitchel (2-0) recorded his second win of the season in a career game high 6.0 innings against the Bulldogs. The Junior leads the team in strikeouts this season with 25.

"Andrew Mitchel does a good job of being 'effectively wild," said assistant coach/pitching coach Tyler LaTorre. "He can move the ball around with his fastball. He pitched in and out of a couple jams, but he got into a rhythm and thats what we're looking for out of our starters. Mitchel did a good job of keeping the hitters in the batter's box feeling uncomfortable."

In game two, the San Jose State got off to a quick start, but were defeated 6-3.

The Spartans struck first when Williams (1-for-3, RBI) singled up the middle and scored Bautista (1-for-4, R).

Fresno State would then score four unanswered runs to take the lead for the rest of the game. The Bulldog's big hit was a three-run homer to right field in the second inning from Miles Tomczak (2-for-4, R, 4RBI) to make it 4-1.

Kellen Strahm (1-for-4, R, RBI), Brett Bautista, Chris Williams, and Aaron Pleschner (1-for-3, R) each recorded a hit in the game.

The winning pitcher was Jaime Arias (2-0). He retired four straight batters to help the Bulldogs to their first road win of the season.

Nikoh Mitchell recorded his first save of the season striking out five batters and walking just one.

The Spartans return Monday, March 19 to wrap up their homestand against Dartmouth at 3:00 p.m.
