Women's Golf In Second Place At MountainView Collegiate

Tucson, Ariz.- Spartan women's golfers Alexandra Cooper and Abegail Arevalo finished the top-five after the first round of the MountainView Collegiate. San José State finished in second place at two-over 290, just two shots behind leader Illinois.

Cooper shot a three-under 69, is tied with two others for second place and is just one shot behind leader Sera Tadokoro of Kansas. Cooper leads the tournament with seven birdies made during the round. Starting her round on #10, She was five-under par after eight holes and made back-to-back birdies on #6 and #7 to go one-over par over her final nine holes.

Arevalo is just one shot behind at two-under 70, and is tied for fifth place. She played her first 10 holes at three-under par with three birdies and seven pars. Arevalo made four consecutive pars and a birdie to end her round.

Ysabel Tran is tied for 17th at one-over 73. She started her round at three-over par with three bogeys and six pars made. Over her final nine holes, Tran made birdies on #5 and #7 and pars on the other seven holes.

Elizabeth Schultz and Franziska Friedrich are tied for 54th at six-over 78. Schultz made on birdie and 11 pars during her round. Friedrich played her final nine holes at one-over par and made two birdies.

San José State is second in the team standings, just two shots behind Illinois who shot and even-par 288. SJSU is three shots ahead of Kansas and four shots in front of Missouri. The team made 16 birdies and 51 pars during the first round.

"It was very nice to see some birdie putts fall today," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "Alex and Abby hit a lot of quality golf shots, and Ysabel had a nice round. We are still looking for the consistency we need throughout the lineup."
