Honolulu, Hawaii----- Distance runner Jennifer Sandoval and triple jumper Nicole Iloanya each emerged victorious for San Jose State University on the first day of the Rainbow Relays hosted by the University of Hawaii.

Sandoval cross the finish line of the 800 meters first in 2:17.76, the fourth best time in the Mountain West early in the outdoor season. The sophomore from Fontana, Calif., ran her first 800-meter race for the Spartans.

Iloanya threw out a 12.39 meters winning the triple jump - the best Mountain West mark in the event early in the outdoor season. The Spartans finished 1-3-5-6 with Cambree Harhaugh third (12.05 meters), Brittany Brown, fifth (11.52 meters) and Kelsey Johnson-Upshaw sixth (11.16 meters).

Iloanya was one of two Spartans to throw a lifetime best in the javelin with her 31.65 meters throw. Teammate Kolbi Sims was credited with a 35.16 javelin mark -- more than 6.00 meters farther than her 2017 outdoor best of 28.39 meters.

"It was a nice start for us. Nicole jumped pretty well and got a PR in the javelin," Said San Jose State director of track and field Jeff Petersmeyer who also pointed to Sims' improvement and new personal best in the javelin as a springboard to a bigger point total when she begins to compete in heptathlons later in the outdoor season.

Second-place finisher Carmen Contreras in the 3000 meters and Cambree Harbaugh, third in the triple jump at 12.05 meters also finished in the top three in their respective events.

The two-day resumes at 8:30 a.m. (HT) with the first of 13 events. Hawaii, Nevada and Hawaii Pacific join the Spartans.
