Tucson, Ariz.--Spartan women's golfer Abegail Arevalo won her first collegiate tournament as she shot a three-under 213 for three rounds at the MountainView Collegiate to win by two shots over the field. San José State finished in second place at 884.

Arevalo finished the tournament with a two-under 70 in the final round on Sunday. A rough beginning to her round, she was two-over par for the front nine, making three bogeys, a birdie and five pars. Arevalo then turned on the birdie-making machine, making four on holes 11, 12, 16 and 17 and went four-under par over her final nine holes.

"I am very happy with winning this tournament and never giving up despite the bad start I had," said Arevalo. "I was committed to sticking to the game plan this weekend, and that paid off with the win that I have been wanting for a while. I was so pumped up today, cheering on my teammates throughout the round. "

Alexandra Cooper finished fourth at even-par 216 after shooting a one-over 73 in the final round. She made four birdies during the round including three over her first five holes. Cooper was one-under par through the first nine holes, before making one birdie, six pars, one bogey and double bogey over her final nine holes. Cooper led the field in birdies made with 13 made over the three rounds.

"A big key to my weekend was being aggressive and hitting it close to the holes," said Cooper. "I struggled a bit on the par 4s on Sunday, playing a little too aggressive of the tees, but I finished the round strong."

San José State finished second in the team standings after shooting a 293 in the third round, finishing nine shots behind winner Illinois. The team made 17 birdies in the final round.

Other Spartan finishers included Ysabel Tran who tied for 38th at 228. She shot a 79 in the final round with three birdies made. Franziska Friedrich shot her best round of the tournament with a one-under 71 on Sunday and tied for 52nd at 231. She made three birdies and 12 pars over her final 18 holes. Elizabeth Schultz tied 66th at 235. She shot a 79 in the final round, making two birdies and going one-over par on holes 10-18 with one bogey and eight pars made.

"Our second-place finish is good for us," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "I loved seeing Abby win this tournament. I know she has this type of performance in her and hopefully can feed off this win for the rest of the year. Alex was calm and steady all weekend. She was rock solid for this team. Hopefully this tournament puts us on an upswing heading into Silverado."

The Spartans compete next at the Silverado Showdown, April 8-10, at the Silverado Resort and Spa.
